What is a Fall Arrest System?

A fall arrest system can be as simple as a beam clamp, body harness and lanyard or as complex as an engineered overhead horizontal lifeline with a trolly but the purpose is the same. A fall arrest system assumes the inevitability of a fall and is put in place to arrest a worker in the occurrence of a fall to a lower level or obstruction. The three components that make up a fall arrest system are the following.

Body Support

Full Body Harness is designed to disperse the arresting load to multiple areas of your body and hold you while suspended in a fall.

Connectors

Lanyard and SRLs or other devise that attaches you from your harness to an anchor point.

Anchors

The point that you tie off to with your lanyard or SRL. An anchor point used in fall arrest needs to withstand 5,000 pounds or have a safety factor of two.

One of the most important things to understand when considering a fall arrest system is fall clearance. Fall clearance is the distance needed to safely arrest a fall from a working height. In order to calculate fall clearance, you can use the definitions and chart below:

Required Fall Distance=Lanyard Length + Deceleration Distance + Height of Worker + Safety Factor

What is the difference between a rigid fall arrest system and a flexible fall arrest system?

The biggest difference is a rigid fall arrest system has no deflection when a fall occurs. This limits free fall distance and most of the time the system can still be used after a certified inspection. A flexible lifeline system like a cable lifeline will sag in a fall increasing freefall distance and once impacted it will need to be replaced. Both system types are affective in keeping workers safe when a fall occurs but the decision on which will work best often depends on the environment and the needs of the specific application.

Davit systems and Tripods

A davit and tripod are typically used in confined space applications. These systems have dual purpose in that they can be used to lower and retrieve workers into a work area, but they also serve as a fall arrest system. When used with an SRL as the fall arrest device a worker can climb down to the work area and have free range of motion as they perform the work. These devises can also be equipped with a winch with a 6:1 gear ratio that allows one user to lower another worker up and down with little effort. With the winch and SRL combined the work can feel safe as the enter and exit the workspace.
